Etiwanda's Jessica Galindo (left) and Natalee Pulver begin celebrating their title as Vista Murrieta shows its dejection. Taylor Edwards managed the only hit for Vista Murrieta, an infield single with two outs in the sixth inning. Edwards hit a high chopper to third base and legged out the throw.
"It's amazing to think about it now," Pulver said. "I was shaking every time I had to pitch to Tatum (Edwards) and Taylor (Edwards), but I had to settle down and do it for my team."
Pulver, a junior right-hander, relied on her off-speed drop and change-up Friday night. Pulver said she hadn't thrown the off-speed drop in four months, and that the pitch was brought back especially for this game against Vista Murrieta.
"We knew they could hit the hard stuff," Etiwanda coach David Masucci said. "We figured if we could change speed, we could keep them off-balance and chasing pitches."
Pulver's pitches led to 12 groundouts and four flyouts, mostly softly hit balls that were routine plays for the defense.
Etiwanda (29-2) took advantage of two first-inning walks from Tatum Edwards and a run-scoring single by Sarah Tarango to take a 1-0 lead. The Eagles tried to extend that lead, but Elizabeth Santana was thrown out at home on a squeeze attempt.
"(Vista Murrieta) came in here with a lot of swagger," Masucci said. "What do you do when you come face to face with a bully? You have to stand up and try to punch them in the nose."
Etiwanda got two more runs off Edwards in the third inning, and Vista Murrieta coach Dan Torres decided to bring in Aly Fascetti. Taylor Thomas gave the Eagles a 4-0 lead in the sixth inning when she launched a solo home run over the fence in left field.
It was more than enough for Pulver, who sat out last season after transferring from Rancho Cucamonga Los Osos.
"It was difficult playing junior varsity for a year," she said. "It feels great to be back out here playing varsity and helping my team win a championship." |
